Andrew Hird
Ryde, United Kingdom
Artist Andrew Hird paints scenes inspired by places that hold personal meaning. “It is important to me that every piece captures my initial excitement in the subject and hopefully transmits the pleasure I find in sharing it,” says Andrew. He studied art in school but initially pursued a different career after being told artists struggle to make a living. About a decade ago, a chance meeting with a British artist encouraged him to return to painting full-time. He built a body of work, rented a gallery space in London, and found success selling his art. Andrew’s studio is a stone coach house attached to his home, where audiobooks and podcasts provide the soundtrack to his creative process. When not painting, he enjoys island life on the Isle of Wight and visiting London for art events.

Artist Statement
Inspiration for my work often comes from familiar places that hold personal significance. I am particularly drawn to subjects that incorporate structure and light.
My paintings develop from location studies and direct observations of the environment. I often walk through an area multiple times, looking for moments or scenes that catch my eye. Drawing is a fundamental part of my practice— even a quick pencil sketch provides valuable information and imprints the character of a location in my mind. When time allows, I create more detailed drawings or small painted studies, which deepen my connection to the subject and help me capture fleeting natural and man-made effects.
In the studio, these references come together to form finished paintings. I especially enjoy the studio process, where I have time to reflect on and develop the inspiration gathered on-site. Draughtsmanship plays a key role, with a measured drawing forming the underlying structure of each piece. My goal is for every painting to capture my initial excitement for the subject and, hopefully, convey the same sense of discovery and enjoyment to the viewer.
