Deborah Eyde
Ann Arbor, Michigan
Artist Deborah Eyde creates encaustic paintings that blend abstract shapes, colors, and textures, drawing inspiration from her daily life and surroundings. "One of my favorite things to do is take off my glasses to view the world—everything becomes simplified, abstract, and full of color and contrast," says Deborah. She discovered her artistic voice during a transformative year of art school in Italy, where exceptional teachers shaped her approach. Her studio, located in the attic of her home, is a spacious and sometimes chaotic environment, with sloping ceilings and minimal wall space. It serves as her creative space and where she packages and stores her work. Music plays a constant role in fueling her inspiration. Outside of the studio, Deborah enjoys hiking, traveling, and walking her dogs, always seeking new experiences to inspire her paintings.

Artist Statement
One of my favorite things to do is take off my glasses to view the world (I’m very nearsighted!). Everything immediately becomes simplified and abstract—shape, color, contrast, and harmony all become more obvious. The human form blends seamlessly with the landscape, and a three-dimensional scene transforms into flat, colorful shapes. Using encaustic medium, paint, and a torch, I interpret my experiences onto a flat panel. This process always yields unpredictable results and endless possibilities.
My goal is to continue pushing toward abstraction, a direction I’ve been drawn to for over 25 years. Sharing my work and knowledge is also important to me, and contributing to my local artist community through teaching and collaboration is incredibly satisfying and inspiring.
Although my art is rooted in universal themes, most of the figures, settings, and landscapes come from my personal life. There’s a universal quality to my work that resonates with others, but it’s always infused with my own experiences.
