Dorothy Dunn | Artist Profile Photo
Dorothy Dunn
Huntington Beach, California
Artist Dorothy Dunn depicts the sensuous movement of natural elements with vibrant and often complementary colors. Her art reflects her deep reverence for nature, inspired by the captivating beauty of the California coastline and the subtle transitions of seasons. I admire the fresh greens of spring, the warm golds and browns of summer and fall, followed by the foggy grays of winter, says Dorothy. Influenced by her time in her grandfather's studio, Dorothy developed a deep connection with colors from an early age, and to this day, feels his encouragement when she paints. Dorothy works in her spacious home studio, filled with natural light, fresh ocean breeze, and harmonious music. Beyond art, she tends her garden, creating a haven for native plants and wildlife, including hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees.

Artist Statement

Art is a way to express my wonder of nature. I use the often vibrant, sometimes muted, color combinations one can find outside. I love to explore the California coastline, walking on the wetlands throughout the seasons, enjoying the fresh greens of Spring, warm golds and browns of Summer and Fall, followed by the foggy grays in Winter. The grasses move with the ocean breeze while the water tempts with its ripples of cool greens and blues. I hope the viewer feels the sensuous movement of color and nature while exploring my paintings. As a child, I spent hours in my grandfather’s studio watching him paint and inhaling the scent of what I came to remember as the smell of color. He introduced me to the joy of painting and I have continued to revel when opening up rich tubes of juicy color ever since.
