Gary J. Noland Jr. | Artist Profile Photo
Gary J. Noland Jr.
Chattanooga, Tennessee
Artist Gary Noland Jr. creates expressive abstracts with rich colors, splashes, and mark-making. “I create layers that are then scraped, scratched, and sanded to give a glimpse of what lies beneath the surface,” says Gary. Artistically inclined at a young age, Gary was inspired to pursue his creativity after winning a poster-making contest in the first grade. Later, he completed his Master of Fine Arts at the University of Kentucky, fully realizing his dynamic abstractions. Gary worked in quality departments of various manufacturing plants—their floors layered with paint and tape that had been scratched or worn down over many years—became a key influence of his distinctive style. Today, his process begins with images of old floors or walls with complex natural layers and wonderful patinas. Each composition has a story or theme that develops during his creative process. His home studio is a modest workplace with adequate light and space. When he is not making art, he spends his precious time with his wife and two children. Gary’s works have been featured in numerous American galleries and shows and are sought after by corporate and private collectors.

Artist Statement

My artwork is an investigation and a reflection of who I am. I create layer upon layer of rich color, splashes, marks, and images. These layers are then scraped, scratched, and sanded to give a glimpse of what lies beneath the surface. My recent body of work involves the use of a variety of materials and tools along with a muted color palette. This is a new direction for my work and I am excited to see where it takes me as an artist.
