My style was heavily influenced by the comics I read as a child, specifically Asterix and Tintin. I use a wide range of materials, including watercolor, gouache, and acrylic paints, as well as ink, usually on paper. I like the bleeding effect and how the colors soak into the paper. I find subject matter in the day-to-day mundane. I like anything functional or hand-crafted. I am a carpenter by trade, so whenever I paint anything, I'm always thinking of the underlying structure of my subject, how it was built, and for what purpose. I usually take initial inspiration from real-life observation, and then think through the subject, rebuilding it in my mind as I would have, adding and subtracting as I see fit. I think the point of my work is to present the aesthetic value of things through a playful lens, and thus, hopefully, letting people's minds wander more freely around the piece. I have always been an artist. I don't remember ever not drawing or painting. But it has taken me a while to find my current style, one which I feel fits me like an old comfy boot. I would one day like to be just successful enough of an artist to live comfortably and run a studio which I can go hide in as long as I need to, but not so successful and famous that I'm forced to be on Ellen or something.
