Hyoungseok Kim
Dacula, Georgia
Artist Hyoungseok Kim produces contemporary figurative work using pointillism as his preferred technique. “My artwork focuses on the story of communication and connection between all things in the universe,” says Hyoungseok. He enforces pointillist methods to emphasize the material aspect of his colorful compositions, representing the energetic behavior through a flow of vibrant dots and particles. His art gravitates toward representing people captured in everyday occurrences. Hyoungseok pursued a BFA and MFA degree in art, achieving his childhood dream of becoming an artist. Today, his home studio in Dacula, Georgia, doubles as a small wood workshop and painting space. He uses reference photos to recreate and transform beautiful renditions of the ordinary and mundane. Aside from his artistic endeavors, he enjoys crafting bespoke audio systems. Music always plays from his handmade speakers to accompany him as he paints.

Artist Statement

My artwork focuses on the story of communication and connection between all things in the universe, which have a variety of ways for completing communications. According to the theory of modern physics, these communications and connections can be dealt with, not only in terms of spiritual or psychological dimensions but rather in the dimension of physical reality.

I want to emphasize this material aspect because my thinking is based on materialism and natural science. The world has many problems that arise out of the insufficiency and discord of communication between human beings and nature. I think that these troubles can be improved by an understanding of this most fundamental connection and communication on a physical level. Nature made by material proceeds to rationality in this broad principle.

In quantum physics, waves and particles are the minimum unit characteristics that can be applied to all basic elements. I want to emphasize the material features of nature by representing this kind of behavior that can be expressed by the flow of dots or particles in my art.

Making artwork is the most important and interesting way that I have of making contact with the world. I want my viewers to be connected naturally to my works, to me, to other viewers, and finally to nature when they are appreciating my artworks. As a result of this connection and communication, we will be participating in a natural and holistic system of the world.
