Ian Hargrove
Evanston, Illinois
Artist Ian Hargrove creates mixed-media abstracts with the overarching theme of the interconnectedness of life's moments. His intuitive and instinctual brushwork characterizes personal experiences and time shared with others through line, color, and interactions of various compositional elements. Ian ventured into the fashion industry as the creative director of his brand, giving him fascinating perspectives of beauty and honing his eye for color–the driving energy behind his paintings. "When I started to work more abstractly, the paintbrush felt right in my hand," shares Ian. "I started to make what has evolved into my distinct style of creating smaller colorful paint marks." He aims to bring the mood, tone, and even temperature of his inspiration to the space it occupies and its audience. Ian works from his home studio, a beautiful and amply lit pre-war condo on the north side of Chicago, with the company of his dog Clarke. He enjoys meditating, working out, traveling, and entertaining his friends with good food and quality time.

Artist Statement
Most of my artistic career was spent painting people, with much frustration. Starting and stopping over months at a time, letting “life get in the way,” and rarely getting work that I was proud of.
When I started to work more abstractly, the paintbrush felt right in my hand, and I started to make what evolved into my bold canvases covered in smaller, colorful marks of paint.
My work is intuitive and instinctual, and I try to let whichever muse has clocked in that day take the wheel, I'm inspired by anything from a flower I saw walking my dog to a song I can't get out of my head. I illustrate personal experiences and time I share with other citizens of the world through line, color, and the interaction between colors in each piece.
My goal is to bring the mood, tone, and even temperature of my inspiration to the space it's installed and the person(s) viewing it.
