Jason Astorquia | Artist Profile Photo
Jason Astorquia
Bellingham, Washington
Conceptually nuanced dimensions map out artist Jason Astorquia’s otherworldly abstractions. He paints organized assemblies that articulate his visionary perspective in multiple layers, each leaving profound depths. Initially trained in applied mathematics at Yale University, Jason found himself seeking his own truth by pursuing creative endeavors, leading him to delve into his artistic inclinations with curiosity and wonder. His process follows a creative impulse, an explosion pushing, through exchanges with etheric whispers, to resolve competing inner tensions towards the balance of the whole. “I trust in the intuition that a feeling is captured - a dip into the otherworldly realms, or the past and present dissolving into one, a scream frozen in glass, the hush of a rampaging fire, or a drop of vivid life thawing from the stillness, says Jason. Numerous galleries have featured his work around the United States, from Seattle, Boston, and San Francisco, all the way to Hawaii. As a family man, Jason also enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, hiking, writing, and exploring ideas that tune him into living more sustainably.

Artist Statement

Born and raised in Twin Falls, Idaho, I am the son of educators and am descended from bankers, politicians, ranchers, farmers, business people, common people, proud people, matriarchs, Scots, and Basques. Originally trained at Yale University in Applied Mathematics, my professional life was primarily consumed with business operations, human resource management and benefits planning/administration, technology consulting, and software engineering, navigating startup companies and the Fortune 500. Somehow, that whole world has never fully fit and I have forever found myself pursuing creative endeavors on the side and seeking to tune in to my Truth. I began painting in 2007 after the birth of my daughter. I was surprised, delighted and taken by working with physical media. Painting has been color therapy, leading me to explore the intersection of the mind and the heart. It has been nothing short of a lifeline for me. I experiment with abstract nature, figures, colors, concepts, and processes. My work is shaped by my journey, curiosity and wonder. Thematically, I consistently explore the boundaries of reality. I am an artist for change. I have had times of inactivity over the years. These periods, followed by reconnecting with painting, have made me aware that this act is a non-negotiable aspect of my being. So, I will follow the path and apprentice myself to what is required to enact the vision and inspiration, whatever may come. All the pieces in my Impressions series are created using the impressions of painted pennies. Money, in intent and consequence, impresses us. Subtly, imperceptibly, it leaves a mark. Materially worthless, it has been awarded great value. It compels us to action, it compels us to wit. A model for equality that feeds on necessity and desire, that rewards innovation and toil, that rewards slight of psychological hand. A zero-sum game without a fixed supply. The manifestation of the minds of men. Allocation transcends generations and, more often than not, dictates a lot. The impressions series – figurative, literal – explores the subconscious impact of an abstract concept. Money’s impression influences perception.
