Marie-Eve Champagne | Artist Profile Photo
Marie-Eve Champagne
San Marcos, California
Artist Marie-Eve Champagne depicts representational and abstract subjects through organic forms with clean planes, thick outlines, and blocks of color. Her compositions, guided by movement and carefully selected palettes, convey a profound sense of unity, articulating concepts inspired by her surroundings. Trained in Fine Arts and Museum Studies, she values the importance and complexity of the viewer's reception to her practice. Whether I'm painting a rock, a plant, or a building façade, I wish for people to be surprised, to feel the urge to look again and reflect on what they observe, says Marie-Eve. She paints in a charming yet cluttered studio in her home in San Diego County, with good music in the background and a big cup of coffee by her side. Beyond her artistic pursuits, she expertly manages the daily chaos and joys of being a mother of three.

Artist Statement

Drawing inspiration from various subjects, my work is about cohesion and continuously second-guessing oneself through movement and color. Is what I see really what is going on? If I look longer, will I perceive things differently? With my abstract corpus, I rely on composition, movement (or absence of it), and a carefully curated palette to bring a sense of unity. Themes of fragmented realities, subtle modulations, and elusiveness are my focus. In my more representational work, I enjoy creating esthetically pleasing pieces that will draw you in either by their technical appeal or unique color combinations. Whether painting a rock, a plant, or a building façade, I wish for people to be surprised, to feel the urge to look again and reflect on what they observe. I frequently juxtapose organic forms with clean planes and ephemeral hues with crisper edges. I have found cohesion often emerges through carefully planned contrasts. After training in Fine Arts first, I pursued a graduate degree in Museum Studies, where I became influenced by the importance and complexities of an artwork’s reception. Since then, the viewer has been a crucial component of my practice. I create art to be seen, to leave my individual space and enter someone else’s. Acrylic paint is my medium of choice, as my rapid pace of work and love of layering need its flexibility. With some good music playing in the background and a huge coffee cup by my side, I often start with a sketch and color palette in mind and then let myself be guided by the creative process. Through a series of pictorial decisions or sometimes fortunate accidents, small gestures accumulate on the surface until I feel I have reached the sense of unity I hoped to articulate initially. Ultimately, my art aims to please, stir conversations, and bring back the simple joy of looking.
