Patrick O
Patrick O'Boyle
Charlotte, North Carolina
Patrick O'Boyle primarily paints in a studio, rarely using reference material other than his own thoughts and dreams. He always paints in a series of five - at the end of the fifth painting he revisits and reworks all of them until he feels they're complete. Using extra-long handles on his brushes, Patrick paints at a distance from the canvas so he can see the works evolve as a whole from the one color he starts with to the vibrant array at the end.

Artist Statement

I am primarily a studio painter, using very little reference material for my work. My art springs from thoughts and dreams inspired by the world around me. I apply paint with large brushes, some attached to long handles so that I can stand back and see my work as a whole. I begin each painting with one color. The artwork then unfolds organically, transforming into a vibrant tapestry of color, shape, and form, taking on a life of its own. Passages of color may emerge and recede with each layer of paint applied.

Working instinctively, I trust the materials and process to be my guides. I aim to offer viewers the space to construct their own interpretation of the imagery and the evolving process behind a finished piece.
