Patty Phan
Boulder, Colorado
Artist Patty Phan captures the beauty of Colorado’s landscapes in her impressionist watercolor paintings. “My art is of places that I love and conjures up specific memories,” says Patty. Her compositions reflect those quiet moments when a strenuous hike, climb, or bike ride pauses, revealing the surrounding beauty. Patty studied art, but as a first-generation Vietnamese-Chinese American, she felt pressured to pursue a stable career, leading her to architecture and technology. In 2020, she picked up a brush again and rediscovered her passion. Now, she paints in a bright corner of her home, accompanied by her two terriers and a playlist that ranges from The Beatles to Beyoncé. When not creating, she enjoys rock climbing, dancing, and spending time with family.

Artist Statement
Painting has always been my first love, with a close second being my love for exploring the wonders of Colorado. My impressionistic landscape watercolors capture those moments when I pause during a grueling hike, climb, or bike ride—when I look up, take a breath, and realize I’m surrounded by beauty and color.
I use vivid colors to capture light and movement, drawing the viewer into the painting and offering them a moment to stop and breathe. Layering soft yet vibrant hues, I let the watercolors swirl, splash, and blend in their magical, unpredictable way.
I am a first-generation Vietnamese-Chinese American based in Boulder, CO. As a young woman, I studied art under Indigenous artist Kay WalkingStick, Italian artist Roberto Manino, and watercolorist Veronica Gross. However, due to cultural pressures, I chose to pursue full careers in both architecture and technology instead of following my passion for art. Nearly 20 years later, during the isolation of 2020, I picked up a brush again and began relearning how to paint. Years later, I’m still at it, more dedicated than ever.
