Ruth LaGue
Florence, Massachusetts
Artist Ruth LaGue paints pastoral landscapes and architecture pared down to their barest forms. By providing the most minimal visual cues, she invokes rather than details—adjusting the placement of the horizon line in her paintings, suggesting a range of natural formations. I am particularly drawn to the interplay between colors and textures in defining spaces, says Ruth. Growing up in an artistic family in Alaska, she has always been encouraged to be creatively curious. Ruth found an indelible connection between the vast, wild landscape of her childhood and the limitless internal landscape of the soul as she traveled through India. The concepts of her practice as a graphic designer and creative director—with a focus on user-centric design—carry over to build a strong foundation for her current work, stretching form, line, and color to their limits. She works at her home studio in Massachusetts with her two Havanese dogs, Rikki and Owen, keeping her company. When she's not painting, Ruth enjoys working the computer, reading, and watching The Great British Bake Off.

Artist Statement
Growing up in Alaska, I was mesmerized by the vast wilderness surrounding me. The boundless skies and towering mountains reminded me of my place in something much larger than myself. During my twenties, a journey through India opened my eyes to the landscape of the spirit—the infinite inner universe within each of us. This fusion of outer and inner landscapes sparked a lifelong mission to capture this connection in my paintings. Landscapes, to me, are fleeting moments in time, sacred encounters with the divine, and quiet reflections I witness and translate onto canvas. In the creative process, I'm fascinated by the interplay of colors and textures, and how they come together to create depth and evoke emotions. A simple contrast between dark and light can transform into a landscape's essence. I strive for simplicity in my work: Can a single block of color evoke the serenity of a spring morning? Can a line capture the vastness of the ocean at sunset? Through my art, I invite viewers to immerse themselves in the landscape, perhaps recalling their own memories or finding solace in their wholeness.
