Alana Clumeck
Campobello, South Carolina
Australian-born Alana Clumeck was raised by artistic parents who owned a pottery studio during her youth. Although she grew up throwing pots, it wasn’t until she was pregnant with her second child that she began painting as creative therapy. For Alana, being an artist is entwined with motherhood. She works from her home studio, so she often paints while watching her children play. When the kids are at school, painting becomes precious meditative time alone. “Since my discovery of art came as a form of therapy, I still use it to paint out my thoughts or feelings,” says Alana. “I will often use symbolism within my paintings to represent how I feel.”

Artist Statement
I grew up in an artist family; my parents owned a pottery for 20 years, which was attached to our house, so there was never a moment in my childhood where they weren’t throwing pots, decorating, or working on other artistic ventures. My mother also painted beautiful, vibrant, and abstract oil paintings. I have memories of her being lost in her paintings for days on end, and now I can relate! I was born to be a maker/creator, and what I love most about being an artist is living out a career I was born to do. I feel extremely blessed! I am not going to lie, my kids talk A LOT, and painting allows my brain to be quiet for hours on end, which gives this momma the mental downtime that I need!
If I am talking to you, you probably don't know it, but I am no doubt studying how the shadows and highlights form shapes on your face. I am looking at the colors of light bouncing off your expressions and I am planning in my head how I might paint that one day. I do the same when I am driving, I am looking at the shapes that the valleys and mountains form and how color has a play in creating that form. I paint in shapes, I never try to paint an entire picture, I am always trying to paint the shapes that form the entire picture.
There is a certain amount of satisfaction gained from painting all subjects. That being said I am really enjoying my wallpaper series that I am currently working on. This is a mash-up of masculine meets feminine, this way I can pick all my favorite subjects and put them together into one painting.
