About this artwork

Artist Nick Savides paints the Empell—n Al Pastor on St. Marks Place and Avenue A, across Tompkins Square Park in the East Village in New York City. I was particularly interested in how the bar is lit at night and the effect of 'outside looking in' when their doors are open in the warm weather, says Nick. The stark contrast between the gentle interior illumination and the bright pink glow from the sidewalk evokes a nostalgic feeling in this tableau. The external wall features a ceramic relief sculpture, a mural, and graffiti, while the interior boasts portraits and more murals on the walls and ceiling. The people enjoying their drinks and company add to the bustling atmosphere of the scene.
