About this artwork

I enjoy walking around Manhattan and thinking about how Ashcan School painters would depict the scenes. This storefront is on 9th Avenue in what is known as Hell's Kitchen. The look of this establishment exudes Ashcan School hallmarks. As I painted this scene I reworked many areas and tried to keep the treatment of the strokes as economical and sketchy as possible. Each detail is a reminder of the unassuming adaptability of the way storefronts along 9th Avenue develop over time.
