About this artwork

The Castle Rock area in the foothills of Mount Diablo, California is a favorite location for artist Catherine McCargar to create plein air paintings. In this scene where hikers climb upwards, a group of trees bank two sides of a cleft in the hills. It's fascinating how the light pierces through the tree's branches, shares Cathrine. This painting was done recently during a long California drought, so the earth is its bare golden self, and waiting for the rains.
